We have now the occasion to compare our taste on contemporary art to the one of Rubell family, thanks to the exhibition at Fundación Santander. And we are lucky for it, as our taste is adapted to our knowledge, and we must admit that in Madrid we have very little chances to see works by artists as influential as John Baldessari, Marlene Dumas, Luc Tuymans or Richard Prince.

When Picasso created the "Suite Vollard", he knew he was creating a new mythical series in engraving history, comparable to Durer's "Apocalypse", Callot's "Misères", Piranesi's "Carceri" or Goya's "Caprichos". "Locus Solus", a novel starred by strange machines and unlikely works of art, is the name of the villa where these treasures are hoarded. "Impressions of Africa" is about papier mache's adventures, similar to those by Le Douanier Rousseau.

Raymond Roussel was admired by Marcel Duchamp and Dadaists, surrealists around Salvador Dalí, the artists of the Pataphysical school... and so many more until today. The Golden Fleece was the symbol of Burgundy's and Flemish power, afterwards of a family (the "Habsbourgs"), later of another one (the "Austrias"), and finally of the Kings of Spain, all dynasties mixed (Bourbon, Bonaparte and Savoy) until today.
Such continuity can't be explained without the magic of a name, the splendor of a symbol, the prestige of an institution. The exhibition "The Golden Fleece and its sovereigns" at the Fundación Carlos de Amberes tells us that story.
