EXHIBITION AT THE THYSSEN: "Miró: Tierra" |

 Soil, land, country, Earth… those are common meanings of the Spanish word tierra. Joan Miró added some more and made of the different tierras a system of symbolic images recurrent in his works for almost 70 years. The Thyssen exhibition explores this artistic obsession of Miró.

Masterpiece of the Year 2008: Goya’s “Third of May” |
|
 200 years ago, on May the 2nd 1808, Spain started its Independence War against Napoleon. There was no formal declaration of war, but rather the popular outburst of an invaded country and its outraged citizens. The next day, the prisoners of this (so long failed) rising were shot by the Imperial Army all around Madrid. Later Goya painted this his memorial to the victims.

The Fire at the Alcazar in 1734 |
 In 1734, the Spanish monarchy received a serious blow: a tremendous fire had burnt to ashes the old historical castle of the Habsburgs. Madrid Alcazar had been, since the foundation of the city by the Arabs, the most outstanding building in town. Its profile over river Manzanares told the travellers about a powerful and solid monarchy.
